The Cinema for Peace Foundation and The Peace, Justice and Security Foundation hosted a Gala on September 2016 to promote human rights, justice and security, where more than 120 international celebrities, senior UN and international justice luminaries as well as victims of genocide and war raise their voices against discrimination, xenophobia and oppression around the world.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein for the first time publicly urged for drawing a line against the demagogues in power and those hoping to be in power. He lashed out at “populists, demagogues and fantasists” exploiting economic hardship and social tensions "to fan racial and religious prejudice” and specifically called out Wilders, Trump, Orban, Zeman, Hofer, Fico, Marine Le Pen and Farage for having something in common with Da’esh (ISIS). “Recovering a supposedly perfect past is fiction” he states, “populists use half-truths and oversimplifications” so “their followers, can feel somehow blameless”. The High Commissioner accused U.S. Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump amongst others of spreading "humiliating racial and religious prejudice" and warned about a rise of populist politics that could turn violent.
